The Academy Awards (or ‘Oscars’) are presented each March for films of the previous year. The first Academy Awards were handed out in 1929, and the presentation was first televised and broadcast live in 1953.

Traditional animation involves a frame-by-frame drawing—each one called a cel. These cels are then photographed onto adjacent pieces of motion picture film. Today, these processes have been replaced with computer animation.

A work that aims primarily to provoke laughter. Unlike tragedy, which seeks to engage profound emotions and sympathies, comedy strives to entertain chiefly through criticism and ridicule of man's customs and institutions. From classical Greek times, comedy has been viewed in contrast to tragedy, but by the late 20th century a considerable corpus of criticism has broken free of tragedy to comment independently on comedy and its several subgenres.

Several origins have been proposed for drama: the ceremonies and dances performed by hunter-gatherers to ensure a successful hunt and initiate the young into the nature of the animals they hunted and the tactics used to kill them is one; dramatic story-telling in which the narrator enacts different roles while telling the story is another; religious ritual, and the enactment of religious stories at festivals, such as those conducted in ancient Egypt from before 2000BC, is a third.

Genre of dark, cynical crime film. Thematically indebted to the "hard-boiled" school of fiction, and stylistically to German expressionism, French poetic realism, and the constraints imposed by B film-making, film noir first appeared in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s.

Genre in which a background of science or pseudoscience is an integral part of the story. Science fiction is the literature of the scientific age. Born in adventure pulp magazines during the first half of the twentieth century, the science fiction genre began to mature in the 1940s and 1950s.
