1st President of the United States (1789–97). General of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. A surveyor by trade, Washington became the first American military hero by leading American forces to victory over the British Army.

2nd President of the United States (1797–1801) and first Vice President of the United States under Washington. American Revolutionary and member of the Continental Congress.

3rd President of the United States (1801–9). Served as Vice President and Secretary of State under Washington, governor of Virginia during the American Revolution, and member of the Continental Congress. American statesman, political philosopher and author of the Declaration of Independence.

16th President of the United States (1861–65). Born on Feb. 12, 1809, in a log cabin in backwoods Hardin co., Ky. (now Larue co.), he grew up on newly broken pioneer farms of the frontier. President during the Civil War. Author of the Emancipation Proclamation, the executive order abolishing slavery in America, who also passed the thirteenth amendment making slavery illegal. Assassinated in 1865 by Southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth.

18th President of the United States (1869-1877). Commander in chief of the Union army in the Civil War, b. Point Pleasant, Ohio. He was originally named Hiram Ulysses Grant.

36th President of the United States (1963–1969), b. near Stonewall, Tex. Johnson lost the 1960 Democratic presidential nomination to John F. Kennedy, but accepted Kennedy's offer of the vice presidential position. After Kennedy's assassination on Nov. 22, 1963, Johnson was sworn in as president and announced that he would strive to carry through Kennedy's programs.

41st President of the United States (1989–1993). Bush was unsuccessful in his bid for the 1980 Republican presidential nomination, but served two terms (1981–89) as President Reagan's Vice President. In 1988, he won the Republican nomination for President. Bush and his running mate, Dan Quayle, easily defeated the Democratic ticket of Michael Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen.

42nd president of the United States (1993-2001)

43rd president of the United States (2001–2009). In 1999, Bush officially began his campaign for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination. Although he appeared generally to lead in the polls, he ultimately lost the popular vote to Democrat Al Gore. However, Bush secured the presidency with a victory in the electoral college when he won Florida by a narrow margin, having outlasted Gore's attempt to challenge the Florida vote-counting process in court. He thus became the first person in more than a century to win the presidency without achieving a plurality in the popular vote.

44th president of the United States (2009-2017). Few Americans have risen to prominence in American politics as quickly or as dramatically as Barack Hussein Obama.
